Fn 49 Rifle Serial Numbers

I have been running several FN-49 surveys on the Parallax, Tuco/Gunboards, and FAL Files Boards for several months. I now have data for 289 rifles in my data base. We have learned a lot about the FN-49 as a result of Board member's contributions. I would appreciate it if all FN-49 owners on this Board would participate in this survey.

The Belgium military was working on two battle rifle designs, the Fabrique National FN 49 (which had been nearly ready when WW2 intervened) and a second more modern design that would become the FAL. The French, anxious to start retiring their remaining Berthier carbines, decided to move on without the rest of NATO soon after the organization. This FN-49 semi-automatic rifle is.30-06 caliber and is marked with an AL on the receiver denoting that it is an Armee Luxemborg contract rifle. Most of the imports into the US of the FN-49 were Egyptian & Venezuelan. Smaller numbers of the AB (Armee Belgique) and AL (Armee Luxemborg) were imported beginning in the early 1960’s.

G&C contributor, range buddy, and all around cool guy Cro picked up an Egyptian Contract FN-49 and was kind enough to trust me with it for a week or so to take some photos. It really is a gorgeous looking gun. FN49.jpg The FN-49 began life just prior to WWII, and the designer, Dieudonne Saive, fled to England when the Nazis invaded Belgium. This rifle is chambered in 7.62 NATO and has all matching numbers with one original magazine included. The Argentine Navy ordered a total of 5,537 rifles in 7.65mm Argentine. Many of these weapons were later converted to 7.62mm NATO and fitted with a 20 round detachable box magazine. Argentine Navy rifles are marked with the Argentine crest and ARA on the receiver. Very uncommon FN 49 variant.
